Pensiamo began ten years ago in the Supply Chain Management (SCM) organization of UPMC, a renowned healthcare provider based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The idea for Pensiamo took shape when UPMC’s SCM saw an opportunity to achieve significant procurement savings by building an internal supply chain solution that would disrupt the fee-based model used by traditional healthcare group purchasing organizations (GPOs).
Prodigo Solutions became part of the UPMC SCM organization when it deployed its eMarketplace supply chain technology across UPMC in 2007, with solutions for contract management, contract compliance, requisition and PO management, and electronic order and invoice management. In 2012, UPMC acquired HC Pharmacy Central Inc., a consolidated service center and GPO for pharmacy. Also in 2012, BioTronics joined to provide service and support for medical equipment, surgical instrumentation, infection prevention, integrated technology solutions, and consulting.
UPMC took up this challenge in 2015, bringing together leading supply chain management tools and cognitive computing experts to transform the healthcare supply chain. The opportunity lies in the vast amount of unstructured data, both internal and external, that affects costs in a modern healthcare organization. The goal is to bring the unprecedented ability to read, learn and create analytics from this data that can be used to make better contracting decisions, anticipate trends, and drive down costs.
With the structure in place to provide the healthcare industry’s only supply chain solution that integrates these capabilities, Pensiamo was launched in 2016 as an independent, for-profit enterprise, with UPMC as its founding client. Today, hospitals seeking to manage costs in a dynamic market can access Pensiamo’s services and technology to establish a supply chain strategy that reaches beyond the medical and clinical costs to include all the factors that drive costs in a modern hospital system.
