Pensiamo is committed to working to improve the efficiency of health care operations, including lowering the cost and improving the performance of UPMC’s own supply chain. It is this vision that has led to the creation of Pensiamo, the cognitive supply chain company. Read more about our beginnings.
We began with UPMC. And grew.
Pensiamo began ten years ago in the Supply Chain Management (SCM) organization of UPMC, a renowned healthcare provider based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The idea for Pensiamo took shape when UPMC's SCM saw an opportunity to achieve significant procurement savings by building an internal supply chain solution that would disrupt the fee-based model used by traditional healthcare group purchasing organizations (GPOs).

A Gartner Top 25 SCM Organization.
The solution began with an Accounts Payable capability, then grew with UPMC's hospital network into a full portfolio of supply chain services that include Strategic Sourcing, Procure to Pay, Solutions and Consulting, Pharmacy, and Clinical Engineering. Over the last ten years, this organization has been recognized by Gartner Group as one of the supply chain industry's Top 25. UPMC's costs have declined and third-party GPO spend had gone from 90% to 10%

Added strength: Prodigo, HC Pharmacy and BioTronics.
In addition to developing its own suite of tools, UPMC's SCM organization integrated three seasoned healthcare supply chain leaders: Prodigo Solutions, HC Pharmacy, and BioTronics
Prodigo Solutions became part of the UPMC SCM organization when it deployed its eMarketplace supply chain technology across UPMC in 2007, with solutions for contract management, contract compliance, requisition and PO management, and electronic order and invoice management. In 2012, UPMC acquired HC Pharmacy Central Inc., a consolidated service center and GPO for pharmacy. Also in 2012, BioTronics joined to provide service and support for medical equipment, surgical instrumentation, infection prevention, integrated technology solutions, and consulting.

Embracing cognitive analytics.
Even with world-class supply chain capabilities in place, UPMC knew there were bigger opportunities. As Jim Szilagy, the organization's Chief Supply Chain Officer, now president of Pensiamo, put it, "We're good; we're Gartner Top 25. However, today's supply chain isn't sufficient. The question is, what are the game-changing ideas that can take us to the next level to meet the challenges of the future?"
UPMC took up this challenge in 2015, bringing together leading supply chain management tools and cognitive computing experts to transform the healthcare supply chain. The opportunity lies in the vast amount of unstructured data, both internal and external, that affects costs in a modern healthcare organization. The goal is to bring the unprecedented ability to read, learn and create analytics from this data that can be used to make better contracting decisions, anticipate trends, and drive down costs.
Now an independent enterprise.
With the structure in place to provide the healthcare industry's only supply chain solution that integrates these capabilities, Pensiamo was launched in 2016 as an independent, for-profit enterprise, with UPMC as its founding client. Today, hospitals seeking to manage costs in a dynamic market can use the best-in-class purchasing power and cognitive power of Pensiamo's full line of services to build a comprehensive supply chain solution that reaches beyond the medical and clinical costs to include all the factors that drive costs in a modern hospital system.
With Pensiamo, best in class is now truly world class.
